International Workers’ Day, also known as Labour Day in some countries, is a celebration of labourers and the working classes that is promoted by the international labour movement, socialists, communists or anarchists and occurs every year on May Day (1 May), an ancient European spring festival.
Every 1 May, workers in Nigeria converge at the stadium to commemorate this public holiday. It is a recognised holiday all workers must observe. On that day the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress addresses workers and this has been a tradition for decades.
In Nigeria, any kind of holiday is always sweet to have because it gives most people (most lazy people) the right to take rest and give the simple excuse for it – holidays are for rests, not works. However, May Day (Popularly known as Workers’ Day) is a very legal holiday all over the world and it is very proper to take full rest in it, because it is like the only day taken out to respect every workers’ work and tell me to take a rest from it. Even though I’m still here working (writing), I am very happy to know everyone is having a day separated for us (workers) to at least rest.
Without trying to waste our May Day on reading what I don’t even know, let’s talk about how last month went on this blog.
